内容説明
A good web development framework anticipates what you need to do and makes those tasks easier and more efficient; jQuery practically reads your mind. Developers of every stripe-hobbyists and professionals alike-fall in love with jQuery the minute they've reduced 20 lines of clunky JavaScript into three lines of elegant, readable code. This new, concise JavaScript library radically simplifies how you traverse HTML documents, handle events, perform animations, and add Ajax interactions to your web pages.
jQuery in Action, like jQuery itself, is a concise tool designed to make you a more efficient and effective web developer. In a short 300 pages, this book introduces you to the jQuery programming model and guides you through the major features and techniques you'll need to be productive immediately. The book anchors each new concept in the tasks you'll tackle in day-to-day web development and offers unique lab pages where you immediately put your jQuery knowledge to work.
There are dozens of JavaScript libraries available now, with major companies like Google, Yahoo and AOL open-sourcing their in-house tools. This book shows you how jQuery stacks up against other libraries and helps you navigate interaction with other tools and frameworks.
jQuery in Action offers a rich investigation of the up-and-coming jQuery library for client-side JavaScript. This book covers all major features and capabilities in a manner focused on getting the reader up and running with jQuery from the very first sections. Web Developers reading this book will gain a deep understanding of how to use jQuery to simplify their pages and lives, as well as learn the philosophy behind writing jQuery-enhanced pages.

JQuery totally rocks!
Unobtrusive JavaScript is awesome. The book is a little hard to read. I imagine it is easier to read in from of the computer while trying the examples, but I have not tried it.
Time Well Spent
Will get you up to speed on JQuery. Provides an overview of JQuery, the Plug In framework and how to program instructions, but I think the book might have been a little better organized. I think that Appendix A should have been chapter 1 and chapter 6 pertaining to the utility functions should have been chapter 2. Also I couldn't get the zip file containing the "lab" and source code to download from the Manning web site.
Good, but could be Better
Overall the book was well written with lots of examples. No issue here. The first 7 chapters moved along quickly!
Some things I wish were better:
1. I wasn't sure if the book was trying to be a reference book or an instructional one with code samples. The jQuery API definitions were spread throughout the book which makes finding these definitions very difficult. Towards the end of the book (Chap. 7,8,9), there were few code snippets of on how to implement these definitions or a demonstration of how to use them in code. Everything seemed abstract.
2. Towards the end of the book the authors kept saying, in effect we don't have the time or have the space to cover or expand on these topics. Say What!!! Maybe the publisher put an arbitrary limit on the amount of pages or maybe there was a deadline. Either way, the authors shouldn't say this in the text. It make s the reader feel like he is being cheated and the authors very vindictive towards the publishers.
3. When talking about AJAX, there were no .Net samples, only Java and PHP. This is a major flaw.
4. Towards the end of the book (Chapter 8 & 9), there were major programs that employed a lot of definitions and script that had been discussed previously which is good. Unfortunately, 85-90% of the code wasn't even discussed by the authors so if you tried to figure it out, you were completely lost. Since you have to use Firebug to step through the code, I wasn't at all happy trying to figure everything out line by line.
Better for coders than designers
When I first got this book several months ago, it seemed dense and difficult to understand, and I didn't get too far with it.
Having gained a little more experience with jQuery, I decided to pick it up again, and this time around I did get much more out of it. It is still a coder-oriented book, however, rather than designer-oriented. To me, the beauty of jQuery is that you really can do a lot with it without knowing the ins and outs of Javascript "closures", for example (which the authors say are important and cover in the Appendix).
The GOOD. The explanations of the various jQuery commands are very clear. Most are introduced in a special box explaining the syntax, parameters, and return values. Also, the examples emphasize how to make your jQuery code compact, efficient, and fast.
The BAD. Many of the shorter examples in the book simply demonstrate the command being discussed, without being an actual useful snippet you might employ in a website. And, as stated above, the authors insist you need to know some nitty-gritty details of how Javascript works in order to write successful code. I still haven't decided if that's true or not. Either way, the Appendix the authors provide to cover these concepts does not do a good job of explaining them to a non-coder audience. Perhaps more importantly, they fail to explain why and in what situations these concepts really come into play. Also, through no fault of the authors, new versions of jQuery have come out since the book was published, so some useful, newly-added features aren't covered.
In CONCLUSION. From a designer's point of view, this may not be best book for learning how to put jQuery to good use on your websites. If you have some solid coding experience, however, especially with Javascript this book will definitely teach you what you need to know about the jQuery library.
How to start?
Ok, so I want to use JQuery, I look in the index for "Setup", found nothing, Look for "Installation", found nothing. "Files / Download". Found nothing. Where in the book does it tell you how to set up the environment and what files you need to do JQuery? Where to put the new files on the PC?
