A great suspense story with characters who are so very interesting. How this author's mind must have worked to craft this story....It's a shame we'll only get the trilogy. I can't wait to read number three in the series.

Here on Amazon, another person wrote that he felt "bad" criticizing the first book, because trashing the book of a "dead" author, is unfair... (obviously he cant explain or fight back).
I also share that feeling.
So, I'm going to trash the Editor and the Translator.
What kind of idiot editor... leaves in mind numbing, boring details starting with the first 50 (plus) pages?!?
(This problem is not isolated to just the beginning of the book, but the "beginning" is the most boring part of the book).
The beginning is a "very" detailed "re-hash" of the first novel. So much so.. you almost don't have to read the first book to understand the second.
That said... if you drink 10 cups of coffee and smack yourself in the face several times,(without hurting yourself) ... after the first 50 or 60 pages, the story actually gets interesting!
Why?
Because the book focuses on the most interesting character, which is Lisbeth Salander.
(Mikael Blomkvist is a snore and his character dominated the first book).
I just don't believe a man can write a "truly believable" book about a woman's perspective. (abused or not).
That said.... Stieg Larsson did an O.K. job.
But, the Editor and Translator did a lousy job.
I'm 56 years old and an avid lifetime reader... 100% heterosexual woman,.... and I have never stopped being amazed at what a "screwed-up" distortion a mans perspective is ... on what they think women feel and think.
Ladies... are we that mysterious!?!
Or is the DNA in men simply clueless ?
Don't get me wrong. I adore men!
But damn, do they always think only with their penis when it comes to a woman? (no pun intended).
The only reason I even bought the second book... I found it in a discount store for only $3:00 Dollars.
I'm glad I spent the 3 bucks. It was worth it. (once I got past the first 60 pages).
Seriously, the middle of the book is very good. The ending of the book... is "a man's" ending.
I'm not saying that a woman can't be "far more" intelligent, determined and vicious than a man.
(Ladies, you know we are).
But, Lisbeth is a woman. (sexual presence changes nothing)... She is fascinating, strong and resilient...
yet, she is written like a man inside a woman.
Bottom line.... I liked the second book.... and I will read the third... with the aid of 10 cups of coffee.

There's a difference between a good storyteller and good writer and Stieg Larsson is not a good writer.
He's a master of the irrelevant detail with a weird fixation on coffee.
His characters "start coffee," "pour coffee," are "impressed" with others' coffee-making skills. I swear F. Scott Fitzgerald did not mention booze as much in all his stories as Larsson mentions coffee in this one book. If Larsson had written "Moby Dick," the opening line would be "Call me Ishmael and join me for a coffee..."
Larson seems to very often miss the point that good thriller writers know about what information to give and what to withhold, and what characters know and what the reader should know and when.
Then there's the needless and draining repetition.
In one tiresome chapter, he gives us a police press conference where all the information (and I mean ALL) is stuff we already know, but is presented again in detail.
There's a 100 page section that's truly risible in its irrelevance. Characters investigate and hit dead ends and "uncover" information we already know. We, the reader, are ahead of the characters, and that's always tedious (unless the characters are being drawn suspenseful into a trap, which is not the case).
As Eric Asimov wrote, you can't wait for Larsson's books to end (as opposed to not wanting them to end) but I have to admit, that despite all their many flaws, I sort of enjoy reading these books. I also spend a lot of time wondering why.
I think it's because, Larsson is a good storyteller, and he creates compelling characters. His Lisbeth Salander is singular pleasure to follow, and whenever she's on the page, the story crackles. Just being inside her head is a perverse pleasure.
I'll probably read the next installment (which is supposed to be much better than "...Played with Fire") and then be glad they're over (but not glad for the reason, of course).

After ordering a simple book, The Girl Who Played With Fire, from Westbrook Books & Music, I had no idea that it would turn into such a pain. I placed the order on the 8th of August. The company did specify that it may take up to August 30th, but in my past orders through Amazon, they have ALWAYS come within a 2 week period. Well it is now Sept 1, there is no book, my account has been billed and there is no tracking number to trace the order. I am so mad, not at the amount, it was a good deal, but that after numerous emails they never once responded back with any explanations. However billing my account was done quite efficiently on their part. I am writing this so that others will not go through what I and others have. DO NOT BUY FROM WESTBROOK BOOKS & MUSIC!!! The holidays will be upon us all to soon, and not having a gift for somebody because of complete negligence on the seller's part would be added stress that nobody needs.

All three books in this series make exceptionally fine reading. It is a unique work in that the main character, Lisbeth Salander, upon which the book(s)is written, is unique: a brilliant/genius young woman who is a seriously flawed person. She is one who gets into life-and-death problems by being her own worst enemy. She is almost totally misunderstood by society, yet has found a small buy loyal following of influential friends who use their combined powers to bring about justice for this child/woman who has aggrieviously been abused and misused since the age of 13, when she became a focus of the government misabuse, when she set her father on fire in an attempt to murder him. She was driven to this because he had been hittin her mother until she was finally intutionalized with brain trauma. Micheal Bloomkvist is her main support and loyal friend. He has a problem, in that she has tried to expel him from her life and he doesn't know why.
This is probably the last book in this series because the author has died. However, there is a rumor that he left a fourth unpublished book that we may one day get to read. The existing three books are a "sit-on-the-edge-of-your chair" suspenseful mystery. It is also a book about a brilliant woman, who probably has some form of autism. In many ways, the cards are all stacked against her, yet her redemption comes through the acts of people who she has touched and love her, often despite a lack of reciprocation on her part. This is a facinating study in humanity and society as well as an excellent mystery that pushes all the right buttons. Enjoy!
