The common sense food handbook?

For me, Pollan points out a ton of ideas that are in my mind common sense. I think this is a great book for the person who eats out 5-7 days a week and has no idea how to cook anything. Also a good book for people that think chips and pretzels is an acceptable dinner. But for the majority of people who actually have interest in a book like this, we probably already have a good idea of what we should and shouldn't be eating.

So, I'd say, it was just so-so. As the very least, it takes about an hour to read so it won't waste too much of your time.

Nicely Done!

Michael adds his sense of humor with facts that make real sense. Was just a bit disappointed there wasn't more detail or examples around the rules.

Food Rules: An Eater's Manual

Michael's Pollan's Food Rules: An Eater's Manual is a must have book. This brief compendium of "rules" related to food and our culture of eating provides invaluable information in a succinct and impactful manner. Since I've purchased the book, I've referred to it almost daily and am trying to put its advice to use. Highly recommended.

Great Little Book

This is a great little book. It's a quick read and speaks to Pollan's mantra of "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." It provides great tips for eating better. Some of the points are a bit repetitive but it 's meant to allow you to pick the points that speak to you, and use them as a guide to better eating. I found it helpful and enjoyable.

A Healthy Eating Checklist!

I enjoy Michael Pollan's work greatly. The Omnivore's Dilemma really started me thinking about what I'm eating and where it comes from.

Here's the thing: The heavier science and nutrional theories in Pollan's other books is great but isn't going to appeal to the average reader. The average reader doesn't want to be inundated with science but does want to be entertained. And, let's face it - as much as we enjoy the other books and Pollan's writing, it has a tendency to be dry and/or verbose.

This is why Food Rules is great AND important. It's the simple rules for eating healthily that are present in Pollan's other books but hidden throughout the books. Food Rules is great for your average American AND for those of us who really *can* use a cheat-sheet reminder list when shopping. It slips easily into the purse and can stay there until we need it.

I wish that this book was required reading for EVERY STUDENT. Older generations now might be unwilling to change their eating habits but tweens/teens are still young and eager to learn. I think that providing this kind of funny, easy-to-read teaching material to students could really start making an impact on childhood obesity.

Like I said, this book isn't for those seeking the lengthy descriptions of industrial food and the rest. It is a *guide.* By following the simple rules we'll ALL be much better off.

(Oh, by the way... Has anyone else noticed how it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to find bread that doesn't list some kind of sugar in it's first three ingredients? I've actually had to go to the Trader Joe's / Whole Foods / etc type stores to find some. Yikes.)
